Position: Secretary

The U.S. Department of Education establishes policy for, administers, and coordinates most federal assistance to education. It assists the president in executing his or her education policies for the nation and in implementing laws enacted by Congress. The department's mission is to serve U.S. students, to ensure that all have equal access to education, and to promote excellence in the nation's public schools. It is the job of the secretary to see that these missions are carried out effectively. The secretary is responsible for ensuring that this happens.

Nominee's Background:

Fritjof Capra, Ph.D., physicist and systems theorist, is a founding director of the Center for Ecoliteracy in Berkeley, California, which promotes ecology and systems thinking in primary and secondary education.

Dr. Capra is on the faculty of Schumacher College, an international center for ecological studies in England, and frequently gives management seminars for top executives.

He is the author of several international bestsellers, including The Tao of Physics, The Turning Point, and The Web of Life. His most recent book, The Hidden Connections, was published this year.
