Position: Secretary - Energy

The secretary is responsible for the following four energy policy areas:
1. To protect national security by applying advanced science and nuclear technology to the nation?s defense.
2.To protect national and economic security by promoting a diverse supply of reliable, affordable, and environmentally sound energy.
3.To protect national and economic security by providing world-class scientific research capacity and advancing scientific knowledge.
4. To protect the environment by providing a responsible resolution to the environmental legacy of the Cold War and by providing for the permanent disposal of the nation?s high-level radioactive waste.

Nominee's Background:

Leader of the energy policy program at the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

Nominating Speech:
Ralph has been implementing progressive energy policy for over two decades. He was a leader in overturning the WPPSS project in WA state and an advocate for demand-side management, conservation, energy efficiency, and alternative energy resources.

And Ralph knows how to play politics.

Progressive Criteria:
The Department of Energy will

Work for a massive reorientation of the country's energy systems to conservation and renewables;

Support research and development in energy conservation and renewables;

Work to move us away from an oil/carbon-based economy;

Recommit our country to nuclear non-proliferation: stop nuclear arms Research and Development. We should be international leaders in this important work;

Dismantle nuclear stockpiles, work with other countries and the UN in securing errant nuclear materials.
