Position: Secretary - Energy

The secretary is responsible for the following four energy policy areas:
1. To protect national security by applying advanced science and nuclear technology to the nation?s defense.
2.To protect national and economic security by promoting a diverse supply of reliable, affordable, and environmentally sound energy.
3.To protect national and economic security by providing world-class scientific research capacity and advancing scientific knowledge.
4. To protect the environment by providing a responsible resolution to the environmental legacy of the Cold War and by providing for the permanent disposal of the nation?s high-level radioactive waste.

Nominee's Background:

4 term Democratic Congressman from Washington State. Prime Co-Sponsor of Apollo Energy Program in Congress which has the strong backing of Senator John Kerry

Nominating Speech:
Jay Inslee is a prime co-sponsor of the Apollo Energy Program in Congress. He believes that alternative energy resources not only make sense from environmental and commercial values but from a national security sense as well. In his time in Congress, Jay has voted to deny drilling in ANWR, voted to support the Kyoto Protocol, voted to raise CAFE standards and against the Bush/Cheney "drill til we drop" energy proposals.

The Department of Energy will

Work for a massive reorientation of the country's energy systems to conservation and renewables;

Support research and development in energy conservation and renewables;

Work to move us away from an oil/carbon-based economy;

Recommit our country to nuclear non-proliferation: stop nuclear arms Research and Development. We should be international leaders in this important work;

Dismantle nuclear stockpiles, work with other countries and the UN in securing errant nuclear materials.
